Traveling on Budget

Traveling the world may take a heavy toll on your budget. But if you plan your trip wisely, the costs for your round-the-world adventure may be lower. Here is a guide on how to travel the world, including the main aspects to keep in mind while planning your trip.

1. Get prepared

Start by preparing yourself thoroughly for the trip. Take your time to bring your documents in order, analyze the visa requirements of every destination and transit country, make the travel itinerary, book flights in advance, choose the right credit card, and look for ways to earn money while traveling. Working remotely as a freelancer will allow you to make money while abroad and travel for months and years on end without having to return to your workplace.

If you don't want to quit your job in your country, you can save vacation days for a long-lasting trip around the world. Or you can consider taking a sabbatical year. Invest time in looking for a credit card that would strip you of foreign transaction fees and help you reap rewards and perks during your trip.

2. Book your trip in advance

There are several options for a round-the-world trip. The most popular option is to use a combination of flights and ground transportation, while having the flexibility to choose your destinations and change your itinerary halfway through. Another option is to get a round-the-world ticket that will give you a set number of flights with various airlines under one alliance.

While you can choose your travel destinations, you have a lower degree of flexibility because you have to end your trip in the same country as you started it. Alternatively, you can consider a world cruise where you will discover multiple continents and countries. You can book the whole cruise or only a segment of it which can last from two weeks to a month.

3. Avoid travel and communications fees

There are some tricks you can use to avoid hidden fees and lower the costs of your trip. Many top destinations allow you to get a City Pass which gives you discounted access to popular tourist attractions and even free transport throughout the city.

To reduce hotel costs, ask the personnel to remove the fees for amenities that you will not use, like pool or gym. To spend less on roaming and international calls, use apps like WhatsApp, Viber, and Skype to talk to your friends and family over Wi-Fi for free. Also, you can buy a local SIM card.

While dining out at local restaurants is tempting, try to avoid restaurants located near major tourist attractions, as they are more expensive. A surefire way of saving money on food is eating at low-key restaurants, buffets, and street food stalls. Most of the time, the food inthese places is cheap, tasty and high-quality.

To improve your travel experience and get a taste for local culture, make sure to enjoy the free perks that some airlines and hotels offer. For example, some Hawaiian Airlines offer free ukulele during the flight. In other places you can get yoga sessions, hot chocolate or night lights.
